UKIPO
Who this is for
A fit if you are
- The owner of a brand already trading in the UK market or planning to sell there soon.
- Someone who wants legal proof of ownership of a name before a competitor uses it or another party registers it.
- A newly formed UK company that wants its trading name protected straight after formation.
Not for
- Anyone who wants protection across the EU member states in one application: that is the separate EUIPO service, not the UKIPO.
- Anyone still undecided on the final name of the mark: settle the name first, before paying filing fees.
- Anyone expecting immediate protection at the moment of filing: full protection only comes with the final certificate after the publication period.
A UKIPO registration protects your mark in the UK only. Protection across the EU member states needs a separate EUIPO application, which is a separate service.
The details and documents we need from you
Sent through the client dashboard; we confirm the final list after the search.
Always required
- The trademark owner's details, whether an individual or a company.
- The mark itself: the name as text, or the logo as an image.
- A description of the goods or services you use the mark for, or plan to.
Depending on your case
- Priority documents, if you claim the priority of an earlier application filed in another country.
- An authorisation to file and follow up on your behalf, where needed.
What you actually receive
What reaches you in the client dashboard at each stage. What each package includes is listed on its card.

The steps, in precise terms
Filing is not registration: after filing you receive an application number, and your mark is only registered once the publication period closes without opposition. Timing depends on the office, and we report every development.
Check and consultation
FreeProfessional opinion and class selectionWe assess the absolute grounds for refusal and similar marks, and agree the right classes for your activity with you before any payment.
Application prepared and filed with the UKIPO
Within daysApplication numberWe prepare the application in the correct classes, file it and pay the official fees. This is the filing of an application, not a final registration yet.
Examination, publication and the opposition period
Months, depending on the officePublication noticeThe office examines the application and the mark is then officially published; we handle the correspondence and tell you about any objection or opposition as soon as it arises.
Final certificate
After the publication period closes without oppositionRegistration certificateOnly now is your mark officially registered and your protection in force; the certificate lands in your account.
Your obligations after registration
- Protection lasts ten years and is renewable every ten years, with an official renewal fee paid to the office.
- There is no annual use requirement, but five consecutive years of non-use can expose the mark to a cancellation request by a third party.
- Any change in the owner's name or address is updated on the register so the office's correspondence reaches you and your details stay correct.
Frequently asked questions
Because an unregistered name is exposed: someone else can use it or register it before you. Registration gives you the exclusive right to use the mark for the registered goods and services, and a legal basis to stop others using an identical or similar name.
No. Filing is only the start of the procedure, and it gives you an application number. Actual registration follows the office's examination and a publication period that closes without opposition; the certificate is issued then.
Yes. Every package includes the official UKIPO fees for the number of classes it states, and each additional class is added at the office's official fee of £60, with no hidden charges.
Ten years, renewable every ten years for as long as you renew and pay the office's renewal fee.
We reduce that risk from the start by checking the grounds for refusal and similar marks before filing. If the office raises an objection or an opposition is filed after publication, we tell you at once and explain the available options and the cost of a response, if one is needed, before any step is taken.
Yes. The owner of a mark can be an individual or a company, and no company is required to register a trademark. We discuss the option that suits your situation in the consultation.
Classes follow the international classification of goods and services. We settle them with you in the consultation based on your current and planned activity, because protection is limited to the registered classes.
Not automatically. Each registration system is territorial: a UKIPO registration protects your mark in the UK only, and protection in the EU or any other country needs a separate application with that office.
